10 minutes from the Grotte de Limousis is the Gouffre géant de Cabrespine, (The Giant Cabrespine Cave), which is 20 minutres from the medieval splendour of Carcassonne.
The first chamber in this cave is as tall as the Eiffel Tower and is over 1,600,000 m3. There are no stairs to climb, so it is in no way tiring for elderly people. They are in 1160 Cabrespine, Tel 0468 16 14 22.
Near to Perpignan is the Grotte Grandes Canalettes, which is open all year round and in the evenings in July and August has a spectable of music and sound. The Grotte includes The Drapery, The White Chamber, The Lake with Atolls, The Auditorium and the Angkor Temple. They are in 66500 Villefrance-de-Conflent, Tel 0468 96 23 11.
Other French caves that are a little further afield, include the Grotte de Trabuc, 1 hour from Nimes and Montpellier, which is open every day from March to November and in Herault, between Montpellier and Toulouse the Museum and Caves of Courniou, which are remarkable for the fineness of their formations defying the laws of gravity. They are known as the "Palace of the Glass Spinner".
