Restaurants in Aude, South France

France is renowned for its gourmet food and there are many excellent restaurants in Aude. All of the restaurants listed below have been recommended to us by guests and friends. They are ordered approximately in terms of distance from the self-catering gite in Couiza, Languedoc-Roussillon. For vegetarians it's harder to find good food, so we've therefore put a V after all of the restaurants which cater well for vegetarians. Please click any of the images for a close-up.
NB, it's a good idea to reserve your table for any of the restaurants below, particularly in the summer. The first 5 restaurants on the list all speak English.

Restaurant le Carnotzet V	Couiza 63 Route des Pyrenees 0468 74 13 13	High quality, traditional cuisine at a reasonable price in a restaurant a short walk from Mode d'Artiste. This restaraunt and bar comes highly recommended from many different guests and has both indoor and outdoor seating. In July last year, Sting visited the restaurant and described it as 'Incroyable'. We quite agree!
Ducs de Joyeuse V	Couiza 0468 74 23 50	A chateau in Couiza which is both a hotel and restaurant. The meals are expensive and of excellent quality. There is a separate vegetarian menu, which you need to ask to see.
Le Fournil de Luc	Luc sur Aude 0468 31 47 75	A bakers (patisserie) serving a delicious range of organic breads, patisseries, biscuits and sandwhiches, open from 6am to 8pm 7 days a week. There is also a small cafe.
La Table de l'Abbe	Rennes le Chateau 0468 741679	Set at the heart of Rennes-le-Chateau in the garden of Berenger Sauniere, a fantastic restaurant grill, with meals served in a large beautiful garden. The host is very friendly, knowledgeable about the area and speaks English. There are often events here, including talks by Holy Blood Holy Grail author, Henry Lincoln, amongst others. Open over the summer.
Pizzeria de la Place V	Rennes les Bains 0468 69 19 61	A pizza restaurant on the square at Rennes-les-Bains with indoor and outdoor tables, open from the end of February to mid December.
L'Atelier V	Esperaza 22 Avenue de la Gare 0468 74 16 06	A café, restaurant and pottery , serving a delicious range of crepes in a relaxing setting, surrounded by beautiful pottery and local artwork. Open all year round.
Pizzeria Cathare V	Esperaza	A good range of take-away pizzas with a small restaurant.
Le Capio V	Quillan 0468 20 16 50	Another pleasant family restaurant with a view over the little square in Quillan and hung with original artwork by local Artists and artisans. Le Capio provides menus in both french and english to help you choose from a selection of pizzas, bolognese, steak and a great choice of vegetarian food.

Restaurant le Plo V	Carcassonne 0468 25 51 85	Carcassonne old city has a plethora of restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets. We highly recommend this restaurant on Rue Plo for its elegant French cuisine. The puddings are so delicious, you'll want to order seconds, with home-made chocolate mousse the way I wish I made it!
Auberge du Faby V	Rouvenac 0468 74 35 42	Excellent vegetarian menu, though meat eaters are also catered for. It's essential to book in advance.

I know it doesn't officially belong on this list, but we highly recommend the patisserie next to the Spar shop in Couiza, which has a fantastic range of sandwiches, snacks, cakes and other treats. If you know of other great restaurants in Aude, Languedoc-Roussillon, please let us know.
